Cassiopeia is a terrifying creature - half woman, half snake - whose slightest glance brings death. The youngest daughter of one of Noxus' most influential families, she was once a beautiful and cunning temptress capable of manipulating the hardest heart. Transformed by the venom of an ancient Shuriman tomb guardian, she continues to serve Noxian interests as she always has, just in a more... visceral way.
While her sister  Katarina has always been the most celebrated member of the household, the Du Couteau family has a long history of service to Noxus. It has often been said that no soldier has ever been as fortunate as General Du Couteau to have been graced with daughters. His youngest, Cassiopeia - despite lacking her sister's killer instincts - was equally renowned in at court for her stately character and elegance. Cunning as she was beautiful, the temptress could never be found far from the arm of any foreign dignitary, her wiles prying secrets from the lips of even the most wary attaché. With the Noxian barbarian pacification campaign having ground to a standstill, Cassiopeia had set her sights on a diplomat from a tribe of theFreljord region. Thinking him an easy mark, the scheming seductress set about beguiling him. He refused to confide in her, however, until she swore an oath of secrecy upon his sword - a strange weapon with a serpentine curve to the blade.

Once her tryst was over, Cassiopeia provisioned her father with information regarding the barbarian resistance. As she divulged this intelligence, a wave of revulsion washed over her. She screamed in agony as her silky skin hardened to scales, her lustrous hair thickened to leather, and her manicured fingernails sharpened to claws. Dazed, she fell upon a group of horrified servants, rending them limb from limb in a heartbeat. When it was over the blood soaked figure was no longer the ravishing jewel of the Noxian court, but a horror trapped somewhere between woman and serpent. Unable to serve in her traditional capacity, Cassiopeia departed for the League, continuing her service to Noxus on the Field of Justice.

"Though she may have appeared the innocent flower, she was the serpent under it."

-  Katarina, the Sinister Blade

Candidate: Cassiopeia

Date: 10 December, 20 CLE

Cassiopeia glides along the marvelous hallway with unnerving grace, the scrape of scale on marble announcing her passing to the empty corridor. Her elegant curves and stately posture combine to form an appalling juxtaposition to her serpentine body. The exquisite features of her face, wreathed in a cobra's hood, bears a look of chilling determination, while a serpent's tail conveys her expediently onward towards her destination.

She pauses for a moment before a pair of grand double doors, the relief of a panther marking each one. Above the doors, carved on the stone archway, is an inscription: "The truest opponent lies within." Her eyes narrow as she reads the engraving.

Cassiopeia stretches a taloned finger towards the door. It parts effortlessly at her touch, swinging open into blackness. She peers hesitantly into the black for a moment before composing herself and gliding inside.

She found herself in her chambers in the Noxian estate she called home. An elegant curtain ran across the center of the room; a shroud against prying eyes. There, through the lace, stood the unmistakable figure of her father, General Marcus Du Couteau. She stared at him longingly, admiring everything about him, from his stately military garb to his perfect soldier's posture.

He stepped forward, extending a hand towards the partition. There was moment of panic. No matter how many times she allowed her closest family to see her, she was always overwhelmed with anxiety and revulsion.

"Don't look at me!" Cassiopeia lamented.

The General froze for a moment. Then his voice took on a sterner character. "You are my daughter, Cassiopeia. And you are beautiful."

"Liar!" she hissed, turning away. She could hear the rustling of curtains as he approached.

"Daughter, look at me", he implored. Reluctantly, she complied, wiping away her tears with a viciously clawed hand. She did not speak.

"Cassiopeia", he went on, taking a step forward, "I have been summoned. It is a grave matter, but one that I cannot refuse."

"Take sister with you. She can keep you safe", she sobbed.

Marcus shook his head, "Katarina cannot return. The matter with Ionia has not yet been settled, and her duty to the League compels her to stay."

"Father, if you do not return, I will be alone", she stated.

The General reached out to touch his daughter's face and she recoiled, turning her back again. His voice turned colder than iron. "You are a Du Couteau, Cassiopeia. You have served Noxus, and she cares for her children. You will never be alone." He paused. "One day, you will remember your duty."

General Du Couteau took her hand and pressed a sealed letter into her palm, crumpling it slightly. "Should I not return, Cassiopeia, this will guide you and Katarina."

Hearing her father turn to leave, Cassiopeia panicked. She spun about, but found herself alone. She examined the letter in her hand. It was marked in a wax signet that she did not recognize, but the seal was already broken. She unfolded the page.

In blood red ink, someone had penned: "Transcendence Way, the Ivory Ward, 5:00 PM." Below it was a stamped image of a black rose.

The peals of a clock tower caught her attention, followed by the sounds of bedlam. All around her the household abruptly became chaos. Each passing footfall and gossiping whisper filled her with ire. There came a hesitant knock at the door. She already knew who to expect.

"Enter!" she commanded, her rage overcoming her revulsion at the thought of being seen. The door swung open, revealing one of her father's bodyguards. He entered slowly, staring intently at her silhouette on the other side of the curtains, his face a mixture of fear and shame.

"Mistress Cassiopeia," he began, "Your father has..."

She cut him off, "Spare me your excuses, fool! How did it happen!"

"We were in the market," he stammered, "Your father slipped away."

"And I ordered you to shadow him, did I not?" sneered Cassiopeia. She drew closer to the partition. The soldier looked away in shame. He did not answer. Cassiopeia sunk her talons into the hanging fabric, ripping it from its moorings in one swift motion and laying bare her monstrous body. "Speak, coward!" she commanded.

The bodyguard backed away in horror, blanching white in shock.

"What's wrong?" Cassiopeia teased, drawing one of her wicked hands to her face in feigned surprise. "Don’t you find me beautiful?"

She advanced, fastening her claws securely around his neck. She lifted his worthless body and suddenly, a shattered pocket watch fell out of his pocket. The watch's hands stopped dead at a quarter past five. "This was all we found," he croaked.

She caught her quarry's gaze in hers, his body shaking as she choked the life from him. His face was white as snow, but for some reason there was no fear in his eyes. Realization washed down the length of her serpentine body. Cassiopeia sneered. "Charlatan," she muttered, venom dripping from the words. "You force me to relive the moment I lost my father for your own sick pleasure?"

The bodyguard's face turned as implacable as his eyes. "Why do you want to join the League, Cassiopeia?" he inquired.

"My father is dead," she spat, "One of you knows something. And I will have justice."

The soldier nodded. "How does it feel, exposing your mind?"

Cassiopeia's looked him dead in the eye. "Curse you," she muttered emotionlessly. The figure dissolved in her grip, leaving only the darkness. The doors to the League swung open.

Patch History

Q and W ranges up. W cooldown decreased.

One of the larger Midseason mage updates, Cassiopeia’s strengths as an immobilizing controller have been muted by a rather weak release state. Low ranges across her poisons appear to be the culprit, as Cassi quite literally lives or dies on her ability to access Noxious Blast’s burst of speed (or Miasma’s grounding). Add in some bonus usability to her poisons and Cassiopeia will see herself actually able to play her keep-away kite game without being overrun.

Noxious Blast.png Q - Noxious Blast

RANGE : 750 850
SAVOR THE MOMENT : Noxious Blast’s movement speed bonus takes longer to decay
POISONOUS CLARITY : “Poisoned” particle’s size has been increased

BRINGING IT BACK : No longer stops upon hitting terrain

5/9/2016 Balance Update

Cassiopeia's update shaved a little too much power off of Twin Fang. Rather than raw damage buffs, we're giving back a bit of its uptime.

Twin Fang.png E - Twin Fang

Cooldown : 0.9 seconds 0.75 seconds
COST : 60/65/70/75/80 mana 40/45/50/55/60 mana
RANGE : 550 (from Cassiopeia's hitbox edge to her opponent's) 700 (from Cassiopeia's hitbox center to her opponent's.) Overall, slight increase against small targets and slight decrease against large targets.

True to her half-snake nature, Cassiopeia bears twin identities of “poison mage” and “lightning-fast viper strikes.” However, the high-input gameplay of Twin Fang has left Cassiopeia wanting for greater impact in her poisons, instead viewing them as a gating condition for her combo damage.

Rather than giving her more damaging poisons (Singed has that market cornered), we’ve sharpened Cassiopeia’s poison fantasy by linking Miasma to another snake fantasy: immobilization. The new Miasma lets Cassiopeia weaponize her own immobility by bringing opponents to her level. By limiting the ability power of champions to leave her kill zone, Cassiopeia dictates the ranges of an engagement, keeping foes at a distance where she can wail on them safely. Should her opponents play around Miasma, however, Cassiopeia loses that control and faces swift punishment from the champions she sought to keep at bay.

SMALL SCALE ADJUSTMENTS : Several of Cassiopeia’s other base stats have been slightly adjusted
ICONS : Cassiopeia has all-new ability icons

"These are two changes aimed at two different things, so we'll explain. First, while we did intend for late-game Cass to be an unstoppable force of a half-snake, the scaling heal on Twin Fang makes her borderline unkillable for some team compositions (particularly given her zone control). Second, when we were looking for ways to trim power on Cass, we saw that her champion update came right before our big refactor of the mana regeneration stat of the 2015 season (with most champions ending up with less mana regen in general). Given that these original numbers were tuned around competing mid-laners of the time (and higher baseline mana regeneration expectations like Athene's Unholy Grail), we decided to modernize accordingly. Cassi's still going to hit like a truck in the lategame - we just wanted to give more windows of opportunity for opponents to take advantage."
  • Aspect of the Serpent.png Passive - Aspect of the Serpent
    • PASSIVE BONUS : At 100 stacks, Twin Fang heals for6/8/10/12/14/16 +0.1 ability power +0.06 ability power
  • Twin Fang.png E - Twin Fang
    • MANA REFUND : If Twin Fang kills the target, it refunds its mana cost plus 3% of Cassiopeia's maximum mana 1.5% of Cassiopeia's maximum mana

Cassiopeia gets less AP when combined with %AP amplifying effects

"Last patch we modified how the first Dragon buff interacts with Rabadon's Deathcap (from multiplicative to additive, with an expected ~1-2% ability power change), but failed to document the larger hit to Cassiopeia, who was tripling (quadrupling?) down on it with her passive, Dragon buff, masteries, and Rabadon's Deathcap. We're documenting it now and realize this is late game Cassi nerf, but we're watching how this shakes out first. "
  • LATE GAME CASSI NERF : Dragon buff and Rabadon's Deathcap now interact additively rather than multiplicatively. When these two ability power % modifications (and masteries) interact with Cassiopeia passive, they now give roughly ~12% less bonus ability power at late, late game.

Q and E have higher mana costs.

"As a lane bully, one wrong move against Cassiopeia can lose you a ton of HP and send you ducking for cover beneath your tower (or just packing your bags and going home). While it's not impossible to fight back, Aspect of the Serpent's healing just reinforces this non-stop lane bully tactic without much in terms of tradeoffs (thanks to Twin Fang's mana recovery). Increasing Cass's mana costs on Q and E should make it more of a calculated decision to harass or sustain, giving savvy opponents more time to formulate a counter-attack (or at least walk back to lane)."
  • Noxious Blast.png Q - Noxious Blast
    • COST : 40/45/50/55/60 mana 40/50/60/70/80 mana
  • Twin Fang.png E - Twin Fang
    • COST : 35/45/55/65/75 mana 50/60/70/80/90 mana
    • CLARITY! : Twin Fang's tooltip now always displays the amount of mana it will restore

Aspect of the Serpent now gains stacks over time and every second an enemy champion is poisoned (rather than on poisoned unit kill or when using Twin Fangs on an enemy champ). Twin Fang now adds a debuff that amplifies poison damage on the target.

"Cassi's recent update definitely gave her the late-game we intended, but at two great costs: her early-game strength, and her identity as a 'Poison Mage.' We're trying to smooth out a bit of Cassiopeia's power here with some early buffs alongside some guaranteed scaling on her passive so that she can hit her early-mid-lategame fantasy (that is now a word) at the appropriate times. In short, we're looking to reach a middle ground between the update and her original feel of killing you slowly with venoms. Just quicker. (And with more venoms)."
  • Aspect of the Serpent.png Passive - Aspect of the Serpent
    • STACK CITY : Cassiopeia builds a stack of Aspect of the Serpent on every poisoned unit kill or on Twin Fang cast on enemy champion once every 6 seconds (10 times per minute) and for every second that an enemy champion is poisoned.
    • IT'S A BUFF WE PROMISE : Cassiopeia gains special bonuses at 75/200/400 stacks 100/250/500 stacks. The new breakpoints will be hit sooner than the old ones based on the new stacking mechanics (above).
  • Noxious Blast.png Q - Noxious Blast
    • EVERYTHING IS NORMAL : Fixed a bug where Noxious Blast's delay wasn't actually normalized (it was hitting anywhere between 0.25 seconds and 0.5 seconds). Now has a flat 0.4 second delay.
    • MOVEMENT SPEED BONUS : 10/15/20/25/30% bonus movement speed 20% bonus movement speed at all ranks
  • Twin Fang.png E - Twin Fang
    • [NEW] LOOK AT THIS SYNERGY : Twin Fang now adds a debuff on the target that amplifies further poison damage by +20% for 5 seconds. This debuff stacks up to 2 times (capping at +40% poison damage).
    • COST : 30/45/60/75/90 mana 35/45/55/65/75 mana
    • RATIO : 0.4/0.45/0.5/0.55/0.6 ability power .55 ability power at all ranks

Some small buffs to Cass's mana, Q's damage scales better with AP, and E's resetting its cooldowns correctly.

"We know Cass isn't doing great on the live environment, but we also want to make sure we don't react too quickly as players are learning a champion and then that champion goes on to demolish everyone (*cough* Kassadin *cough*). Still, we can give Cass a little bump as we watch her being picked up. This might be a conversation we'll revisit next patch! "

Cassi's received a gameplay update! Focusing on her new passive Aspect of the Serpent, she's now more about stacking up poisons for massive end-game scaling than being a dominant laning force. Mana costs, cooldowns, base damage and ratios have all been mixed up to compensate - read below for the numbers!

"Cassiopeia's high DPS has always sat alongside her poison as defining characteristics of the serpent lady. Historically however, these traits have led to oppressive gameplay that's as challenging for the opponent to deal with as it is to understand (THANKS DAMAGE OVER TIME). To preserve both sides of what makes Cassi unique, we realized we had to modify the relationship between the two.
In this update, the key to Cassiopeia's heavy-hitting damage potential lies within her new passive, Aspect of the Serpent. Cassi builds power throughout the game as she poisons enemy champions, unlocking stat bonuses to fuel her (now more powerful) Twin Fang. This new aspect (heh) of growing her end-game scaling allows us to solidly push her into the 'completely-absurd-damage-potential' space she's currently hanging around. This comes at the cost of some early game power, but make no mistake - you can expect to see a late-game Cassiopeia as one of the most potent damage threats in the League."
