G2 Esports is a Spain-based multi-gaming organization, currently competing in League of Legends' EU LCS. They were formerly known as Gamers2 before rebranding to the current name in 2016. They currently compete under the name G2 Kinguin in representation of their sponsor Kinguin.

History

2016 Season

G2 Esports rebranded from the name Gamers2 in October 2015, after qualifying for the EU LCS. In addition to rebranding, the team changed several positions in their roster: from Smittyj, Kikis, PerkZ, Jesse, and Hybrid as their qualifying roster, G2 Esports moved Kikis to top lane and add Korean players Trick and Emperor. Their roster quickly rose to prominence and recognition in the LCS, consistently tied for first place after each week, sometimes with H2k and sometimes also with Vitality, until the end of the split when they held first place with sole possession. With a quarterfinal bye, the playoffs also saw them strong, as they defeated both Fnatic and Origen 3-1 to win the season and secure an invitation to the Mid-Season Invitational.

Going into MSI, G2 Esports were seen as a favorite not to win, but to come in second place to the Korean representatives SK Telecom T1.[1][2] However, the team lost their first four games of the round robin and ultimately finished in fifth place, ahead of only SuperMassive eSports, and out of playoff contention - importantly, this placement meant that Europe would miss out on a Pool 1 Seed at Worlds. In a statement published partway through the second day of play, G2 stated that their players had taken vacation time after a "rigorous Spring Split."[3] Emperor later stated that there had been an internal conflict within the team one day prior to the start of the event.[4]

These several factors - their performance compared to expectations, the far-reaching impact of their result harming the European region as a whole for Worlds seeding, and their statement seeming like a poor excuse - resulted in the organization receiving significant backlash from the community and sparked a debate with varied opinions on the matter from different people.[5][6][7][8]

G2 revamped their roster for the 2016 EULCS Summer Split, adding superstar bottom lane Zven and Mithy, as well as adding Expect in the Top Lane after Kikis' departure. In the regular season, G2 went undefeated finishing in 1st place with 10 wins and 8 draws. Entering the 2016 EULCS Summer Playoffs as the heavy favorite, G2 defeated Unicorns of Love (3-1) in the Semifinals and then the massively improved Splyce squad (3-1) in the Finals to win their second EU LCS title in a row. This would also qualify them for the 2016 World Championship as Europe's #1 seed.

G2 was then drawn in Group A along with LCK champions ROX Tigers, NA's second seed Counter Logic Gaming and IWCQ winner Albus NoX Luna. The team, however, failed to make it out of the group stage, finishing the Worlds run with a 1-5 standing.

Despite the massive failure the team had at Worlds, the organization still chose to re-sign the entire squad for the 2017 EU LCS Spring Split. The team also added Team SoloMid's former Coach, Weldon Green, as the Assistant Coach.

2017 Season

G2 continues to dominate the EU LCS throughout the 2017 Spring Split, losing only to Roccat in Week 10. With a 12:1 record, they were directly seeded into semi-finals where they faced off Fnatic. They closed out the series 3:1 fashion and moved on to the finals to play against Unicorns of Love. As expected, G2 won their third consecutive European title and earned the right to represent EULCS at the 2017 MSI.

At the 2017 Mid-Season Invitationals, G2 went 4-6 to rank third in the Group Stage phase. This ensures that EULCS teams get first tier placement in the upcoming 2017 World Championship. In the Playoffs, they first faced WE where they defeat them 3:1 to advance to the finals. Against the reigning champion SK Telecom T1, G2 was only able to take one game off of them. Still, they redeemed themselves in the eyes of their fans, having performed poorly at the previous MSI.

Entering into the 2017 Summer Split, the team was placed in Group A along with Fnatic, Roccats, Misfits, and Ninjas in Pajamas. Though throughout the summer split the team was still considered a strong team, it was clear they were no longer dominant like they were in 2016, especially against Fnatic who was quickly establishing themselves as the best team in Europe. This was especially apparent in the inaugural Rift Rivals Red when the team performed dismally by securing only a single win against Cloud9 in the group stage; though to be fair, only Unicorns of Love made it out of the group stage to compete against Team Solomid in the Rift Rivals Finals. After the Rift Rivals, the team's performance slid off a bit more, ending their summer regular season in 2nd place in their group to secure a quarter-final bye in the 2017 EULCS Summer Playoffs.

In the quarter-finals, the team narrowly beat Splyce in a five game series to advance to the next round. In the semi-finals, they faced off against H2K and this time they were able to close off the series in a convincing 3-0 fashion to automatically qualify for 2017 Worlds by points alone. In the finals, they faced Misfits who was able to eliminate Fnatic in the semi-final in a surprising 3-1 fashion. Though their opponent was able to put up some good fights in the finals series, G2 dominated the finals without losing a match to secure their fourth EULCS championship, thus securing a first seed status for the European region in the 2017 Worlds Championship.
